Highlight Museum - May 7, 2020
Thinkery in Austin is the third children's museum we're exploring as a "Virtual Vacation." We hope these overviews introduce you to new activities as our "stay at home" directive continues and also, that you may learn of a fun vacation destination when we are FREE to vacation again!
Thinkery Austin, Texas
Introduction: "Thinkery is where children and their families come to enjoy play-based, inquiry-rich, hands-on learning experiences. In 1983, a group of Austin parents and educators created a space to provide innovative new educational and cultural opportunities to local children. Over the next three decades and rooted deeply in its commitment to supporting a thriving Austin community, the Austin Children’s Museum grew and evolved into Thinkery, which today offers 40,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor activities for children and families to learn through play."
Thinkery offers 14 STEAM-focused exhibits including favorites like Light Lab, Currents and Our Backyard.
Light Lab - Light Lab welcomes guests to investigate the impact of color, light, and shadows in a darkened gallery. Visitors can draw with light, freeze shadows, play and manipulate colors with circuits and build light structures using blocks, LEDs, and projected light.
Currents - Watery science you can see, feel and hear. Visitors get wet exploring concepts of fluid dynamics and discovering the connections between water and sound. This gallery features several hands-on activity stations to engage visitors in open-ended aquatic investigations.
Our Backyard - Our Backyard invites guests outside to scale the heights of a universally-accessible, custom-designed three-story Climber. Play in a gentle stream with native stone, while using tools such as buckets and sieves for water play.
GREAT AT-HOME ACTIVITIES, TOO!
Thinkery At Home was introduced as a response to the current COVID-19 pandemic. The staff collected all their original content and supplemented it with links to other resources to create a large eLibrary of activities.
Thinkery is committed to supporting Austin’s (and all) children, caregivers, and educators, as we all adjust to a new way of living and working, and serving our community where all of us are right now: At Home. These activities are found on Thinkery's Facebook page and their YouTube channel. They also offer many Story Time videos in Spanish.
Beyond Thinkery at Home!, the museum has an active blog where they extend the museum experience by offering news, projects in the community and fun STEAM projects to try at home.
